Identifying topic and topic sentence

Topic is an important thing between readers and writers. Identifying the topic in a paragraph can make the reader understand what is being discussed in the text. Topic is the main core or subject of discussion which covers the entire content in the text.

Topic sentence is a sentence that is the core of a paragraph that contains all the contents in the text. In the main sentence contains the main idea, main idea, and topic. The main sentence usually has only one sentence in a paragraph. The main sentence is general and broad.

  • Features of the topic sentence

1. Stand alone.

The main sentence can be said as the main sentence when it stands alone and can explain the next sentence. However, explanatory sentences cannot stand alone because they must be related to other sentences.

2. General in nature

The gist conveyed in the main sentence contains general information. Because it contains general things, it relates to examples, facts, data, not the points located in the main sentence.

3. Contains certain problems or certain ideas

With the problems that arise, then there is further development that explains these problems.

  • How to find the topic sentence

1. Find keywords in each paragraph

2. Look for explanatory sentences, because the explanatory sentences will be more detailed than the general main sentences

3. Pay attention to the series of sentences in the explanatory sentence.
